MA Museum Administration program

Program 
St. John’s 36-credit MA Museum Administration program offers students training for a wide range of museum specializations and welcomes students from a diversity of undergraduate majors, among them anthropology, art history, fine arts, history, journalism. Combining rigorous academic training and hands-on experience, course offerings adopt interdisciplinary and object-based studies with a focus on preparing students in the areas of archives and collections management, curating, and museum education. Program graduates have obtained jobs in major museums in New York and across the US, as well as in art galleries, auction houses, public archives, and historic houses. Core curriculum centers on building skills in writing, research, and information literacy. Faculty and guest lecturers are professionals with museum experience.

Partnership programs
Students enrolled in the MA Museum Administration program may take up to five electives (15 credits) in our partner programs: MA Public History and MLS Library & Information Sciences.

Location
St. John’s University’s main campus is located in Jamaica, Queens. We also offer courses in Manhattan at our 101 Astor Place campus in the East Village—as well as online.

Accelerated five-year pathway programs for undergraduate students
The Department of Art and Design offers undergraduate BFA programs in Fine Art, Illustration, Graphic Design, and Photography, and a BA major in Art History. Our BFA degree programs produce visually sophisticated, intellectually driven artists and designers who are ethically conscious, and critically aware. The following three majors offer accelerated five-year pathway programs with the Master of Arts in Museum Administration: BFA Fine Arts/MA Museum Administration, BFA Graphic Design/MA Museum Administration, BFA Photography/MA Museum Administration.

The BA major in Art History trains students to appreciate, analyze, and write about art from around the world through aesthetic, historical, socio-cultural, and political perspectives. The accelerated five-year BA Art History / MA Museum Administration pathway program offers exceptional preparation for careers in the visual arts.

The program has successfully placed students in internships and jobs at: The American Natural History Museum; Barneby’s.com; El Museo del Barrio; Guild Hall; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; The 9/11 Memorial and Museum; The Rubin Museum of Art; The Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian and the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum; the Solomon R.
